Why you can’t talk about your plans, how to learn how to plan and not die at work – we explain and motivate.

Jeff Hayden, a well-known columnist for the information portal Inc., author of articles for Time, Huffington Post, Business Insider, wrote a book on motivation (The Motivation Myth: How High Achievers Really Set Themselves Up to Win), which became the best-selling book in the USA. On its basis, we highlighted the most common, according to the author, myths about what should be the engine of personal progress and what should be done when the eyes no longer burn, and inspiration does not come.

Motivation – Chance and Flash

“There is no mood,” “The moon is in the wrong phase” —but there can be no reason to be inactive and wait for a flash to occur, a brilliant idea dawns and the cornucopia will be covered with all sorts of benefits. Most of us are convinced that it is motivation that gives strength to work more and more efficiently. But Jeff Hayden claims the opposite. According to the journalist, motivation is the result, the pride that you feel for him. She is the fuel for self-esteem, charging for new achievements. And if motivation equals action, it is necessary to fight procrastination, step by step to get down to business. You need to be able to enjoy small victories that lead to gradual improvement. Repeat the action over and over to become more experienced and professional. “Perfection gives a feeling of pleasure. Perfection fosters courage. Perfection leads to knowledge, and knowledge leads to self-confidence. Success generates motivation, ”says Hayden, and not vice versa.

Need to share your intentions and plans.

People are divided into two categories: those who keep all their plans secret so that envious people do not jinx them, and those who simply need approval and support, speaking to the audience. It turns out that the first are right. Research (Psychological Science 20, No. 5, May 1, 2009) shows that people who publicly share their intentions tend to be less likely to follow. It works like this: describing your intentions, you get a portion of empathy, you feel like a unique person, because you are going to, conditionally, launch a rocket into space. The brain receives its portion of happiness and no longer sees the point of straining. So it turns out that what was supposed to motivate produces the opposite effect. “Those around us are not able to motivate us. And if they are capable, then not much and not for long. That is why we ourselves are not able to motivate ourselves. And if they are capable, then not very and definitely not for long. Otherwise, we would have already achieved all our goals. And it’s not even a matter of willpower, although it is believed that willpower is what distinguishes successful people from dreamers, ”it’s worth taking a note.

You always need to think about the goal.

To succeed in a particular business, you must always be concentrated, think about the goal … Let's say a month will pass, and the plan to conquer the world will be implemented by 5 percent. What to do? To become discouraged? To panic? Jeff Hayden advises to stop thinking about goals, dream and soar in the clouds: “Fantasies are useless if not backed up by work. Dreams are born quickly, but without a process they die just as quickly … and leave behind one disappointment. I am sure that we have all been quite disappointed in life. Instead, you need to define a goal, present it as a target, to draw up an implementation plan … and forget about that goal. The main purpose of the goal is to help develop a process for achieving it. ” Hayden argues that the path to the goal brings almost more pleasure than its achievement, provided that you operate on the scale and crazy ideas, and not all these terribly boring words: “realistic”, “non-abstract”, “reasonable”. If you clearly understand the distance from point “A” to point “B”, have an action plan and focus on it, do not forget to praise yourself for the smallest successes and results, you can develop a valuable sense of satisfaction, which is an excellent motivator.

Professional uniqueness motivates

The pursuit of excellence is our enemy. Even in a career. Now in the professional sphere, specialists of a wide profile are valued more by narrow specialists. The world does not stand still. The skills needed today can become trash tomorrow. No matter how we oppose this trend, it is becoming increasingly relevant. But, as the author of the book writes, do not drop everything and start studying Chinese or programming. If you intend to become a universal or, as Hayden calls it, a “serial winner”, do not be afraid to go beyond the usual role, remember that there is always time for change, even if it seems otherwise to us. “And don't say,“ I don’t know where to start, because I don’t know what I want to finish. ” One of the main reasons why people are afraid to do something is the absolute belief that the first step should be a logical component of a large and complex plan, in which all the steps and steps are pre-described in detail. And if there is no such plan, then they don’t start. ” Common situation? If yes, then give yourself several times for 5 or 8 years, think about what you would like to do, what will bring income and happiness, estimate what is required of you, and start acting.

You need to work until the last breath

So do perfectionists and those of us who are motivated by self-sacrifice. Following Hayden, we write that this is an unhealthy approach. More productive to plan, prioritize, assign yourself the same deadlines. This disciplines and, again, works for encouragement when we praise ourselves for our small success on the path to the big. The author of the book suggests experimenting with motivation, using it to increase productivity. But for this you need to put yourself in a little uncomfortable conditions. For example, if you like listening to music while you work, give it up. Start with an important task, and turn YouTube on when it’s done. Reward yourself. Hayden recommends stretching the pleasures, for “a deferred reward is the best reward and the best motivation.” At the same time, it is important to bring matters to the end, exploring the boundaries of their capabilities, but not weaknesses.
