A lot has happened during this time. Talented and recognizable people from all over the world stayed in it – Theodor Dreiser, Henri Barbus, Ivan Bunin, Isaac Babel. It underwent changes, reconstructions, became the residence of the heads of parties, changed its name, and after a century of work it returned to its original appearance.
It all began in 1898.
Then the profitable house of the merchant Naum Jurassic decided to turn into a prestigious hotel. Two architects, popular at that time, were invited to create the project – Alexander Bernardazzi and Adolf Minkus. They were tasked with creating a place that meets the criteria of the best European hotels, both outside and inside the building. The name itself, by the way, was also borrowed from the Austrian hotel of the same name, in which many wealthy residents of Odessa liked to relax. However, created in a more technological time than the old European counterparts, Bristol was largely able to surpass them. For example, a telephone was installed in each room, and electric lights were connected, which at that time were not yet widespread. It was also the first hotel in Odessa with a height of 4 floors, which in itself attracted attention. Well and, of course, high-quality service, interiors, excellent location and exquisite cuisine allowed the hotel to quickly earn the love of both domestic and foreign guests.
However, love is love, and politics is politics. In 1917, after the October revolution and the Bolsheviks came to power, the building ceased to be a hotel, and went under the offices of leading officials. Of course, this entailed considerable changes in the decoration, appearance and atmosphere. After 10 years, labor cooperatives managed to resume the work of the hotel restaurant, which was extremely popular earlier, and thanks to the great attention and support of the population, the Soviet authorities still allowed the hotel to resume work. He underwent many more changes, became more ascetic, restrained, and received a new name – “Red”, under which he worked for most of his story.
In the early 2000s, the hotel acquired Vertex Hotel Group, which also manages the first Odessa hotel Londonskaya, and the Kiev President Hotel. The company conducted a total restoration to restore Bristol and its original appearance, and its original name. For 9 years, dozens of specialists worked on the hotel, who recreated both the general look and atmosphere, and tiny, but important details. For example, in order to maintain maximum authenticity, furniture, carpets and wallpapers were purchased from the same manufacturers and in the same style as a hundred years ago. The stucco molding and ancient statues were also recreated anew, the same breeds of marble were ordered and processed.
Although, of course, there were some improvements, and the classic interiors were supplemented by several banquet and conference rooms, a gym and a spa area. Therefore, today Bristol Hotel is something more than a comfortable hotel. It is also the history, symbol, and hallmark of the city. Atmospheric and elegant.
